Stress on the Immune System
When we are under more stress, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally, we must put energy into supporting the immune system. Stressors such as lack of sleep, break in routine, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or known exposure to an infectious agent, can take a toll on our immune system.
With the knowledge that the body will focus on survival by adapting to the environment, when we have a stressful outside environment, it will weaken our body’s immune function.
Gut Healing
The best immune support for when the body is under stress is to rest the digestive system. Make it easy for the body to absorb the nutrients you are putting in, and reduce things that are stressors such as:
- sugar
- processed foods
- refined carbs
- foods loaded with additives and chemicals
- unhealthy fats from poor quality animal sources
- processed, inflammatory oils (vegetable oil, canola oil, margarine)
Fasting
Research has continually supported the healing benefits of fasting. This is a great way to allow all the body’s energy to go towards healing. A water-only fast is beneficial, but not for everyone to start with, depending on their body. Bone broth fasting is a great way to get nutrients in and support the digestive system while the body is restoring balance and healing.
Minimally, stop consuming sugar if you want to support the immune system. Sugar will directly compromise immune function. Especially in the early phases of your body working to restore balance, we must support the body’s ability to heal and not interfere with it.
“While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment.”
