Are you ready to restore your health?
I’m a bit of a nerd! I know I come off as super hip and cool (sarcasm) but I love learning. Few things get me fired up as much as history, especially the history of how things work and why they are the way that they are. So over the years I’ve done a lot of reading about the history of chiropractic, where the profession came from, and why. But recently I decided to read the very first chiropractic textbook! Sounds fun right!? It’s a book that few chiropractors even know exists much less have read but I want to know as much as I can about my profession so I can better help you and the people you love! I’m not even halfway through but the insights I have gained have forever changed the way I see the world and health.
Our modern view of health and disease has become blurred. We have lost sight of what health is and where it comes from by focusing on science and disease. Because of research we have boiled the ails of humanity down to a few hundred diseases and if through testing (science) you check off enough boxes, you are diagnosed with a specific disease for which we have specific drugs and surgeries. But what if your ailments don’t fit into those cookie cutter boxes?? Then there’s no hope for you, or it’s all in your head! We’ve all known someone who has suffered for years and no amount of testing could come up with a diagnosis so they are left without hope because they don’t fit into a box! The issue here is that we have come to view disease as the entity to be treated. “You have heart disease, we can treat that.” “You have Crohn’s disease, we can treat that.” We treat the disease itself.
In chiropractic we look at things a very differently. We see health as the entity as opposed to the disease. Much like darkness is merely the absence of light, we know that disease is merely the absence of health. That means that we should strive to restore your body to health as opposed to fighting the disease! Try fighting the darkness. What can you do? Nothing! Only restoring the light can rid you of darkness. The same is true of health and disease.
This takes a paradigm shift because the world has taught us that our bodies were made broken, you were born lacking something from the outside, and that only through medicine like vaccines can we have health. Chiropractic says the exact opposite! We start with the principle that your body was made for health. You were made perfectly! You were born with all the ability to fight disease and germs and the only reason you wouldn’t have health is if something is preventing your body from healing like normal. Let me say it again, health is normal, disease is not.
The first chiropractors said it best:
“ Disease is a term used by physicians for sickness. To them it is an entity that one can have and is worthy of a name hence diagnosis. Dis-ease is a term used in Chiropractic, meaning not having ease. It is the condition of the body when it does not have ease (health). In Chiropractic, ease is the entity and dis-ease is the lack of it. Dis-ease in Chiropractic is indicative of the body being minus something that should be restored, in order to make it normal; that is, the body lacks ease, health, coordination, transmission, adaptation, well being, 100% quality, soundness, sanity, etc., which must be brought up to 100%, or RESTORED. That is what Chiropractic aims to do; remember it, RESTORATION.”
Chiropractic Textbook – Stephenson 1927
I say all that to say this; what ever you are dealing with, whether it is low back pain or heart disease, the problem is that something is preventing your body from healing like it was designed to and the solution is to restore your health not fight the disease. Fighting the dark is a fool’s errand. Light the match and bring back the light.
