Once upon a time, humans lived without grocery stores and even without agriculture. Early humans were forced to hunt and gather for nourishment. So after a hunt, it was unfathomable to waste any of the parts of the carcass. Some of the features, though, like the bones and hooves, were too tough to chew. So humans would add hot stones inside of the carcass to soften the bones. Then as our frontal cortex grew, we invented tools like the pot. Once this modern kitchen staple was designed, our ancestors began adding the bones to boiling water to draw out the nutrients, and the liquid would be consumed.
The consumption of this health-packed golden liquid has spanned across every culture for generations. A pretty intelligent guy from Greece you may have heard of named Hippocrates would prescribe bone broth to any person suffering from digestive ailments. Traditional Chinese medicine has used this tonic for digestive and kidney health for thousands of years. Over the years, we have neglected broths in our diet, but now is the time to take back your health and begin consuming this broth again.
Research has proven the bone broth is the most potent food in helping to mend a leaky gut. Bone broth is also high in the amino acid glycine, and muscle meat is high in the amino acid methionine. Our primal ancestors consuming every part of the animal were consuming glycine and methionine at a 1:1 ratio. This ratio is shown to be protective against cancers and other degenerative diseases. Since we are not consuming bone broth or organ meats regularly, the balance is now heavily favored towards methionine.
My wife Samantha and I always have bone broth in our refrigerator. We save all the bones from what we consume, and once we have collected enough, we add the bones to our Insta Pot to make the broth. The recipe we use can be found below.
